✨Navigating Allergies: Why I Check Every Food Label (Even Fish Fingers!)

As a mum to a little one with multiple allergies, food shopping has become a completely different experience. My daughter has confirmed allergies to egg and dairy, with possible peanut and other allergies still being tested. That means every trip to the supermarket feels like a mini investigation — and honestly, sometimes a battle.

Snacks and simple meals can be the hardest. As parents, we’re always worrying: “Are they eating enough? Am I giving them the right foods? Could this be the meal that triggers a reaction?” Add teething into the mix and suddenly every day feels like a cycle of worry about what they can safely eat.

The Fish Finger Discovery 🐟

Recently, during a shopping trip to Aldi (which I filmed for you — see below 👇), I decided to compare their premium fish fingers with the cheaper option. What I found surprised me:

Video here

  • The cheaper brand had more actual fish content than the premium ones.
  • The premium version contained more allergens and additives.
  • The cheaper box was only around £1.39, while the premium version cost £3.25.

👉 It was such a good reminder that price doesn’t always equal quality or safety, especially for families managing allergies.

Why Reading Labels Matters

There have been times when I assumed a food would contain egg or dairy, only to flip it over and find it hidden in the smallest print. I always wish allergens were written clearly in big bold letters on the front of every pack.

But since that’s not the reality, we as parents need to be label detectives. That day in Aldi, checking the fish fingers was just another step in this journey of protecting my daughter and keeping her safe.

Practical Tips for Parents

Here are a few things that help me (and might help you too):

  • Always read the back of the pack — even if it’s something you’ve bought before, recipes change.
  • Keep a food and symptom diary — for example, if your child develops a rash or upset tummy after a meal, note it down along with the food brand and ingredients.
  • Don’t be afraid to choose the “basic” brand — sometimes it’s safer, simpler, and even healthier.

My Ongoing Journey 🌿

Alongside managing my daughter’s allergies, I’m also exploring whether there are foods or approaches that can help heal her eczema naturally. It’s not the main focus of today’s blog, but it’s something I’ll share as I learn more.

I know many of you are also looking for holistic approaches, so let’s keep this conversation open.

Final Thoughts

This is the very first blog post I’m linking from my Facebook page — and it feels fitting because it captures exactly what I want this space to be: a place where we share honest discoveries, helpful tips, and real-life experiences about living with allergies.

If you’re a parent navigating the same journey, I’d love to hear from you. Do you also find the “cheaper” options sometimes turn out to be the best ones? Drop me a comment or share your experience below 👇.

🌮Mexican -Inspired Shrimp & Bean Flatbread Feast: A Budget-Friendly Family Favourite

Tonight’s dinner was a Mexican-inspired creation that brought bright colours, bold flavours, and happy faces at the table. With prawns sautéed in spices, crunchy cabbage, hearty mixed beans, and fresh herbs, this meal was budget-friendly, nutritious, and absolutely delicious. Even better? My son said it was the best meal I’ve cooked this month! 🥳

This dish shows how a little creativity, budget finds, and pantry staples can turn into a family feast.

🛒 Ingredients (Aldi + Pantry)

  • Shrimp/Prawns – £2.69 (Aldi frozen)
  • Protein flatbread – Aldi
  • Corn tortilla wraps – Aldi
  • Cucumber – ~69p (Aldi)
  • Red cabbage – Aldi
  • White cabbage – Aldi
  • Mixed beans (tin: black beans, kidney beans, butter beans) – Aldi
  • Sweet peppers – leftover from yesterday’s rice
  • Spring onions – market
  • Fresh tomato – market
  • Garlic – fresh
  • Dill, parsley, basil – fresh herbs (market)
  • Mexican seasoning sachet – Aldi pantry
  • Maggie Season Up (fish flavour) – ½ tsp (pantry)
  • Lime juice (bottled) – Aldi pantry
  • Grapeseed oil – pantry
  • Salsa (Tesco, reduced to 70p)
  • Sweet potato fries (Tesco reduced)

👩🏽‍🍳 Method

  1. Prepare the prawns – Sauté in grapeseed oil with Mexican seasoning and ½ tsp Maggie Season Up. Set aside.
  2. Make the veggie base – Chop red cabbage, peppers, garlic, parsley, dill, and basil. Sauté in the same pan to soak up the seasoning.
  3. Build the bean mix – Add the mixed beans, lime juice, and seasoning into the pan. Stir and simmer for flavour.
  4. Warm the rice – Add yesterday’s rice to the pot so it soaks up the spices and juices.
  5. Prepare the wraps – Heat flatbreads and tortilla wraps in the air fryer.
  6. Assemble fresh garnishes – Slice cucumber, tomato, spring onions, dill, and parsley.
  7. Plate up – Start with rice + bean mix, top with prawns, add garnishes, drizzle salsa, and serve with warm wraps and sweet potato fries.

🍽 Family Review

  • My son: Declared this the best meal of the month! He loved the combination of shrimp, beans, and fresh toppings.
  • My daughter: Preferred the cucumber and nibbled on prawns while I cooked. She skipped most of the rice (she’s been having lots of it lately) but still enjoyed the fresh veggies.
  • Me: Loved the bold flavours, the freshness of the herbs, and how budget-friendly the meal turned out.
