When the Cost of Living Feels Heavy: Support for Mums & Families

Being a parent in today’s economy can feel overwhelming. Food costs rise, rent increases, childcare is expensive, and sometimes even when you're doing everything right, it still feels tight.

I’ve been there. And I know how hard it can be to ask for help.

This guide is here to support mums and families who may need extra help with food, nappies, clothing, baby equipment, furniture, or emergency financial support.

There is no shame in accessing support. These services exist because families matter.

🇬🇧 UNITED KINGDOM SUPPORT

Food Banks – The Trussell Trust

https://www.trusselltrust.org

The Trussell Trust runs food banks across the UK. Most require a referral from a professional such as a social worker, GP, midwife, health visitor, children’s centre worker or housing association support officer.

Turn2us – Benefits & Grants Checker

https://www.turn2us.org.uk

Turn2us helps families check benefit entitlements and search for charitable grants. You can use their benefits calculator confidentially.

Discretionary Housing Payment (DHP)

Find your local council

If you receive Universal Credit or Housing Benefit but still struggle with rent, you may apply for a Discretionary Housing Payment through your local council.

Household Support Fund

Household Support Fund Information

This government-funded scheme helps with food, energy bills and essential household items. Applications are made via your local council.

Baby Banks (Clothing, Nappies, Equipment)

Little Village (London)
Stripey Stork (Surrey & Croydon)
Rainbow Baby Bank

These charities provide baby clothes, nappies, toys, prams, cots and essential equipment. Referral from a professional is usually required.

🇺🇸 UNITED STATES – NEW YORK SUPPORT

NYC Food Bank

https://www.foodbanknyc.org

Provides free groceries and meals across New York City.

NYC ACCESS HRA (Benefits & Cash Assistance)

Apply for SNAP (food stamps), cash assistance, rental help and childcare support.

Women, Infants & Children (WIC)

New York WIC Program

Provides food vouchers, formula and nutrition support for pregnant women and families with young children.

In areas with high living costs and low disposable income such as parts of the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens, these programs are widely used and supported.

🌏 ASIA SUPPORT

🇮🇳 India – Government & NGO Support

Public Distribution System (Food Ration)
Akshaya Patra Foundation

Provides food distribution and family support in lower income communities.

🇸🇬 Singapore – ComCare Financial Assistance

https://www.msf.gov.sg/Comcare

Short-to-medium-term financial assistance for low-income families.

🇨🇳 China – Local Civil Affairs Bureaus

Families facing hardship can apply for Minimum Livelihood Guarantee (Dibao) through local Civil Affairs offices.

🛒 Affordable Essentials for Mums (Amazon Finds)

Sometimes waiting for referrals takes time. These affordable essentials can help bridge the gap:

Tip: Check if your bank offers cashback rewards (e.g., Halifax Cashback Extras, Barclays Blue Rewards, or NatWest Rewards) before purchasing essentials.

How to Ask for a Referral

If you’re unsure how to ask for help, you could say:

“Hi, I wanted to ask if you’re able to refer me to any local food banks or baby banks. Things are tight at the moment and I’d really appreciate support with essentials. I understand some organisations require professional referral — would you be able to help me with that?”

Simple. Clear. No over-explaining needed.

Remember: needing support does not mean you are failing. It means you are navigating a difficult season — and there is help available. Connect with me

Why Choosing Peace Isn’t Giving Up — It’s Healing

Choosing peace through boundaries, no-contact, and emotional clarity isn’t weakness — it’s how many women begin healing from trauma and unstable relationships. Includes trusted therapy resources and calming tools.

Many women are praised for being strong.

Strong enough to cope.
Strong enough to survive.
Strong enough to keep going without support.

But no one asks what that strength is costing them.

For many women — especially those who grew up without consistent emotional protection — strength becomes a survival strategy rather than a choice. You learn to tolerate inconsistency. You learn to minimise your needs. You learn to stay calm in chaos because chaos feels familiar.

When Emotional Absence Becomes Normal

Not all neglect looks loud. Sometimes it looks like distance. Phone calls instead of presence. Words without action. Promises that don’t turn into support.

In psychology, this is often discussed through attachment theory, which explains how early caregiving relationships shape emotional regulation and expectations of support in adulthood.

Learn more:
Verywell Mind – Attachment Theory

Emotional neglect doesn’t always leave visible scars, but it can deeply affect how safe we feel asking for help.

Further reading:
Psychology Today – Emotional Neglect

Why Ambiguity Is More Harmful Than Absence

Inconsistent relationships create confusion. One moment there’s connection, the next there’s silence. Promises are made, then broken. Support is offered, then withdrawn.

This pattern can keep the nervous system in a state of hypervigilance — a trauma response where the body remains alert to threat even when no immediate danger is present.

Learn more:
Harvard Health – Understanding the Stress Response

For many people, stepping away from ambiguity isn’t cruelty — it’s nervous system regulation.

Boundaries Are Not Punishment

Choosing no-contact or low-contact isn’t about anger or revenge. It’s about recognising patterns and deciding not to live inside them anymore.

Boundaries are not:

  • Punishment
  • Bitterness
  • Shutting people out

Boundaries are:

  • Emotional safety
  • Clarity
  • Protection for children
  • Permission to rest

Tools That Can Support Calm and Regulation

Healing isn’t only cognitive — it’s physical too. Sensory tools can help the nervous system settle, especially during periods of stress.

  • Weighted blanket for calm and sleep:

  • Herbal sleep teas: chamomile, lavender, valerian
  • Journaling: helps release emotional tension
  • Gentle stretching: supports physical and emotional regulation

Redefining Strength

Strength isn’t enduring everything alone.

Strength is choosing predictability over chaos.
Strength is valuing peace over appearances.
Strength is trusting your own perception again.

If this resonates with you, know this:

You’re not difficult.
You’re not asking for too much.
You’re responding to something that never felt safe.

Valentine’s Day as a Single Mum: Pouring Back Into Myself

Valentine’s Day looked different for me this year.

It wasn’t about roses.
It wasn’t about waiting for someone to plan something.
It wasn’t about proving anything.

It was about pouring back into myself.

And as a single mum — especially in this cost-of-living climate — that is not something I do often.

💭 The Reality of Being a Single Mum in 2026

Let’s be honest.

When you’re raising children alone, self-care becomes the first thing to go.

  • Hair appointments
  • New trainers
  • Eyebrows
  • Nails
  • Even eating out as a family

Before pregnancy, I kept up with everything. Hair done. Brows shaped. Trainers fresh.

Then life shifted.

  • Bills became priority
  • Stability became priority
  • The children became priority

If I have extra money, I naturally choose them first.

And I don’t regret that.

But I realised something powerful this year:

You cannot pour from an empty cup.

📅 Planned Joy Is Still Discipline

This wasn’t reckless spending.

I planned this day two months ago.

I told myself:

“Once I’m stable after the holiday, I’m going to pour into me.”

And I did.

  • ✔ I went to the hairdressers
  • ✔ I bought myself new trainers (long overdue — the old pair were worn out)
  • ✔ I took my kids out to eat
  • ✔ I spent quality time without rushing

It wasn’t extravagant.

But it meant everything.

Because discipline isn’t just about saving.

It’s about structured joy.

💸 The Finance Angle: Budgeting for Self-Care

One thing I’ve learned as a woman with a background in business, finance and marketing is this:

Self-care should be budgeted — not impulsive.

Instead of feeling guilty, I:

  • Planned it in advance
  • Cleared bills first
  • Stabilised post-holiday spending
  • Allocated money intentionally

That’s empowered spending.

There is a difference between:

  • ❌ Emotional spending
  • ✅ Planned restoration

If we don’t plan joy, life becomes survival mode only.

👟 The Trainers Moment

I had been walking in worn-out trainers for months.

Literally holding on.

But I kept saying:

  • “Next month.”
  • “Bills first.”
  • “Kids first.”

I’ve thrown away many things in past transitions — especially during trauma or big life changes. I don’t hold onto clutter.

But in clearing out, sometimes we forget to refill.

Buying those trainers wasn’t vanity.

It was replacing what I actually needed.

💆🏽‍♀️ Motherhood Shouldn’t Mean Self-Erasure

Being a mum requires sacrifice.

But it should not require disappearing.

When I feel good:

  • I’m calmer
  • I’m softer
  • I’m more patient
  • I’m more present

My children benefit from my wholeness.

This Valentine’s Day reminded me:

  • Love isn’t always romantic
  • Sometimes it’s responsibility
  • Sometimes it’s rebuilding
  • Sometimes it’s choosing yourself

And this year, I chose me.

❤️ Final Reflection

If you’re a mum reading this and you’ve been putting yourself last for months — maybe years — I want to say this:

Plan something for yourself.

  • Not chaos
  • Not debt
  • Not impulse

Intentional care.

Because we teach our daughters how to treat themselves.
And we teach our sons how women should treat themselves.

I want mine to see strength, balance, and self-respect.

Phuket Travel Hub: Real Family Guide, Budget Breakdown & Ethical Experiences

If you're planning a trip to Phuket with kids — or as a single parent — this is your complete real-life guide.

This hub brings together everything from my Phuket series: hotel reviews, budget breakdowns, ethical elephant sanctuary visits, 7-Eleven convenience hacks, family itineraries, and lessons I learned travelling during Christmas peak season.

No filters. No sponsored fluff. Just real numbers, real experience, and practical travel strategy.

🌴 Start Here: Planning Your Phuket Trip

🏨 Where We Stayed

🐘 Ethical Elephant Sanctuary Experience

One of the highlights of our trip was visiting the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary in Phuket.

Important: These elephants are rescued. No riding. No climbing. Just feeding, observing, and learning. Always choose ethical experiences when travelling.

🍜 Daily Life in Phuket

🧳 Travel Essentials I Actually Used (Mum Edition)

These made travelling smoother with a toddler and teenager:

💰 Real Budget Insight

Booking activities through platforms like Klook saved money compared to walk-in prices — especially during Christmas peak season.

However, always check:

  • Transfer vs no-transfer options
  • Holiday schedule changes
  • Cancellation policy
  • Customer service access (WhatsApp support was helpful)

Pro Tip: Book at least a few hours in advance — or the day before — during peak periods.

📌 Why This Hub Exists

This isn’t just a travel diary.

It’s about:

  • Travelling intentionally
  • Budget awareness
  • Ethical tourism
  • Showing mums that you can move, explore, and still protect your energy

Phuket was more than a holiday for me. It reminded me what breathing properly feels like.

✈️ Travel Resources I Personally Used for Phuket

For transparency, these are the platforms and services I used while planning and travelling to Phuket with my toddler and teenager. Having everything organised before arrival made the journey far smoother.

  • ✈️ Flights & Holiday Packages: Love Holidays – I booked our overall travel package here.
  • 📱 eSIM Data (Stay Connected Abroad): Airalo – Downloaded before landing so I could message family immediately on arrival.
  • 🐘 Activities & Tours: Klook – Used for booking the Elephant Sanctuary experience at a better price than walk-in rates.
  • 🚖 Local Transport in Thailand: Grab App – Reliable for taxis, airport transfers, and local rides around Phuket.
  • 🏨 Hotel Stay: Novotel Phuket Resort (Accor Group) – Family-friendly with childcare facilities and club lounge access options.
  • 🛡️ Travel Insurance: Always arrange comprehensive travel insurance that includes medical cover, flight delays, and child coverage before travelling abroad.

Tip: Booking activities and transport separately can sometimes work out cheaper than package add-ons — but always compare total costs and transfer inclusions first.

🐘 Elephant Sanctuary in Phuket: How I Booked Ethically, Saved Money & What You Must Know Before You Go

Close-up of a rescued elephant resting peacefully at an ethical sanctuary in Phuket, Thailand, surrounded by trees and shaded structures.

Phuket, Thailand – Christmas Experience

There are moments in travel that feel bigger than photos.

For me, visiting an ethical elephant sanctuary in Phuket was one of them.

It wasn’t just an excursion. It was a bucket-list experience for me and my son — and a Christmas treat for all of us.

But here’s what most travel vlogs don’t tell you:

  • ✔️ How to book it properly
  • ✔️ How to avoid overpaying
  • ✔️ What “ethical sanctuary” actually means
  • ✔️ What apps are cheapest
  • ✔️ What happens if you book the wrong ticket (yes… I did 😅)

This post breaks it down properly.

Woman in orange dress feeding a rescued elephant at an ethical elephant sanctuary in Phuket, Thailand, while visiting with her family on holiday.

How I Booked the Elephant Sanctuary (Step-by-Step)

I booked through:

Klook
https://www.klook.com/en-US/

The experience I chose was:

“Feed Me Program” (No Transfer Included)

That means:

  • No hotel pickup
  • You arrange your own transport
  • Lower overall cost

And that’s exactly why I chose it.

🚕 Why I Didn’t Choose Hotel Transfer

Many platforms offer transport included — but it increases the price.

Instead, I used:

  • Grab App
  • Uber (checked for comparison)
  • Bolt (sometimes cheaper at peak)

At peak times, Grab was significantly cheaper than Uber.

Booking transport separately saved money — and gave flexibility.

Tip: Compare ride prices 15–20 minutes before leaving. Surge pricing changes quickly.

💸 Cost Breakdown & What You Get

When booking through Klook:

  • ✔️ Lower price than walk-in
  • ✔️ Free drink included per ticket
  • ✔️ Discount on professional photos
  • ✔️ Online customer support
  • ✔️ Direct WhatsApp contact with sanctuary host

If you turn up and pay at the door:

  • Approximately 200 baht more per person
  • Still possible, but more expensive

During Christmas period, availability changes quickly.

You must book at least a few hours before or ideally the day before.

I accidentally booked the wrong number of tickets (Christmas rush brain 🙃).

Solution?

I contacted Klook customer service + messaged the sanctuary via WhatsApp directly.

They were responsive and helpful.

Screenshot of the Klook app showing the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary Phuket Experience listing, rated 4.8 out of 5 with over 2.2K reviews and 50K+ bookings. The page displays images of elephants, pricing at US$24.69, and options to add to cart or book now.

Ethical Sanctuary: What That Actually Means

  • Does NOT allow riding elephants
  • Does NOT allow climbing
  • Focuses on rescue and rehabilitation
  • Allows feeding under supervision
  • Keeps elephants calm and free-moving

You can tell when animals are well cared for.

These elephants were calm. Relaxed. Responsive but not distressed.

If elephants were abused or stressed, their behaviour would reflect it.

Ethical tourism matters.

🎄 Christmas in Thailand: Important Booking Note

Christmas is heavily celebrated in Phuket.

  • Some activity times change
  • Some tours cancel
  • Sessions book out quickly

During peak season:

  • ✔️ Double-check basket before checkout
  • ✔️ Screenshot confirmation
  • ✔️ Contact provider immediately if incorrect

🧳 Travel Essentials I Recommend for Mums Visiting Thailand

These made my life easier:

  • Stanley Stainless Steel Travel Cup – keeps drinks cold in 30° heat
    Shop Here
  • Lightweight baby carrier (hands free for excursions)
  • Crossbody travel bag
  • Portable phone charger
  • Compact travel stroller
  • Cooling towel for kids

You don’t need luxury. You need practical.

🧠 Smart Booking Strategy

Before booking any excursion, compare:

  • Klook
  • Booking.com Experiences
  • GetYourGuide
  • Viator
  • Direct provider website

Sometimes direct booking is cheaper. Sometimes aggregator apps offer discounts.

Always compare.

Final Thoughts

Would I recommend it?

Absolutely.

Was it worth it?

Yes.

Would I book the same way again?

Yes — but double-check ticket quantity first 😅

Ethical travel. Smart booking. Intentional experiences.

That’s how I want to travel moving forward.

How I Stayed Connected Abroad Without Roaming Charges: Using an eSIM While Travelling to Thailand

When travelling abroad — especially as a mum — staying connected isn’t optional. On my recent journey from London to Phuket with a toddler and a teenager, I wanted to avoid roaming charges, SIM card queues, and unnecessary stress.

I decided to use an eSIM, and while it made arrival much smoother, there were a few things I wish I’d understood beforehand. This post explains exactly how eSIMs work, how I used Airalo, what challenges I faced on arrival, and how you can avoid expensive mistakes when travelling internationally.

Why Staying Connected Matters When Travelling with Children

Travelling solo with children means data isn’t a luxury — it’s essential. Having mobile data immediately helped with:

  • Messaging family to confirm we’d arrived safely
  • Accessing hotel and transfer details
  • Using maps and navigation apps
  • Managing unexpected delays calmly

After a long-haul flight, the last thing you want is to rely on airport Wi-Fi or search for a SIM card desk.

What Is an eSIM?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM that allows you to activate a mobile data plan without inserting a physical SIM card. Most modern smartphones now support eSIMs.

This means:

  • No swapping SIM cards
  • No losing your main number
  • No surprise roaming charges

You can switch between your regular SIM and your eSIM directly in your phone settings.

Using Airalo: My Real Experience

I used Airalo during my Thailand trip.

What worked well:

  • I installed the eSIM before travelling
  • I had mobile data as soon as we landed
  • I could message family immediately on arrival

What caught me out:

  • Switching the correct data line on landing
  • Turning roaming OFF on my main SIM
  • Knowing which SIM was actually being used

I noticed many people on the flight were also confused about this, so if you’ve struggled before — you’re not alone.

How to Avoid Roaming Charges (Step-by-Step)

  1. Download the Airalo app before travelling
  2. Install the eSIM while connected to Wi-Fi
  3. Label it clearly (e.g. “Thailand Data”)
  4. Turn Data Roaming OFF on your main SIM
  5. Use Airplane Mode on landing
  6. Select the eSIM as your mobile data line

Once this is set correctly, you can use mobile data without being charged by your home network.

Square step-by-step graphic showing how to switch an iPhone to a travel eSIM. Step 1 shows iPhone Settings with “Mobile Service” selected. Step 2 shows SIM options with “Primary” and a travel eSIM labeled “Travel.” Step 3 shows mobile data set to the travel eSIM with primary SIM turned off for data and mobile data switching disabled.

How Much Can You Save? (UK Example)

UK networks like EE charge daily roaming fees outside Europe, which can quickly add up on a long trip.

You can view EE’s roaming charges here:

EE International Roaming Charges

Using an eSIM gives you more control over spending and avoids unexpected bills.

Where We Stayed in Phuket

We stayed at a Novotel resort in Phuket, which was extremely family-friendly and ideal after a long journey.

You can read my full, honest review here:

Novotel Phuket Review: Real Prices, Lounge Access & Family Experience

The service, facilities, and overall value made it a comfortable base while travelling with children.

Getting Around Thailand with Kids

Having mobile data on arrival made booking transfers and navigating Phuket much easier.

We pre-arranged our airport transfer, which removed stress after a long-haul flight — something I’d recommend when travelling with young children.

Travel Essentials I Actually Used

These are everyday travel items that genuinely helped on long travel days:

Final Thoughts

Using an eSIM removed a huge amount of stress on arrival, even though there was a learning curve. With the right setup, it’s one of the easiest ways to stay connected while travelling abroad.

If you’re travelling with children, especially long-haul, preparing your connectivity in advance can make the first day far calmer.
