Waist Trainers, Corsets & My 7-Day Challenge: The Truth Behind The Trend ✨

woman in corset measuring waist

Waist trainers and corsets seem to be everywhere lately.

From fitness influencers to celebrities, social media often makes them look like the secret to achieving a smaller waist overnight.

As someone who is currently focused on improving my fitness, strength, posture, body composition and overall wellness, I decided to test one for myself.

Not because I believe a corset will magically burn fat, but because I wanted to see:

  • ✨ Whether it supports posture
  • ✨ Whether it helps during workouts
  • ✨ If it improves core awareness
  • ✨ How it feels throughout the day
  • ✨ Whether it helps me feel more supported as a busy mum

This blog combines my personal experience with current research so we can separate myths from facts.

Why I Decided To Try A Waist Trainer πŸ’ͺ🏽

After completing my previous Pilates challenge, I noticed huge improvements in my posture, core strength and waist definition.

Pilates helped me build a stronger foundation and improve my body awareness.

As I started my new challenge combining kettlebells, HIIT and Pilates, I became curious about whether a waist trainer could provide additional support during workouts.

My goal is not simply weight loss.

I am focused on:

  • Building muscle
  • Improving body composition
  • Strengthening my core
  • Improving posture
  • Increasing overall fitness
  • Creating sustainable habits

My First Impressions ✨

The first thing I noticed wasn't my waist.

It was my posture.

Almost immediately I found myself standing taller and becoming much more aware of my core.

I also noticed additional support around my lower back.

As a mum who spends a lot of time carrying children, pushing a pram, lifting shopping and staying active, this was something I appreciated straight away.

Another thing I noticed was increased heat during workouts.

The waist trainer definitely made me sweat more.

However, sweating more does NOT automatically mean burning more fat.

This is one of the biggest misconceptions online.

Myth #1: Waist Trainers Burn Belly Fat πŸ”₯

One of the most common claims online is that waist trainers burn stomach fat.

Current research does not support this.

According to Harvard Health, spot reduction is largely a myth.

This means no product can force fat loss from one specific body area.

Fat loss happens when the body consistently uses more energy than it consumes through:

  • Nutrition
  • Exercise
  • Movement
  • Consistency

Research:

Harvard Health – Can You Target Belly Fat?

Myth #2: Waist Trainers Permanently Shrink Your Waist

Another popular claim is that waist trainers permanently change your shape.

In reality, most of the visible effect comes from temporary compression while the corset is being worn.

Once removed, your body generally returns to its normal shape.

Long-term changes usually come from:

  • Body fat reduction
  • Muscle development
  • Improved posture
  • Core strengthening
  • Consistent exercise

What Research Actually Says πŸ”¬

Research on waist trainers is limited, but experts generally agree they may provide:

  • ✔️ Temporary shaping
  • ✔️ Increased posture awareness
  • ✔️ Core support
  • ✔️ Increased body awareness
  • ✔️ Compression support during activity

The Cleveland Clinic explains that waist trainers may temporarily alter appearance but should not be viewed as a weight-loss tool.

Cleveland Clinic – Do Waist Trainers Work?

The Mayo Clinic also notes that waist trainers do not permanently reshape the body and should be used carefully.

Mayo Clinic – Waist Training Facts

Benefits I've Personally Noticed So Far πŸ’š

  • ✨ Better posture
  • ✨ More awareness of my core muscles
  • ✨ Increased support during workouts
  • ✨ Better lower back support
  • ✨ More confidence during exercise
  • ✨ Encourages me to stand taller

One unexpected benefit was being able to comfortably complete my full push-ups while feeling supported through my core and back.

Potential Risks To Consider ⚠️

Waist trainers are not suitable for everyone.

Possible concerns include:

  • ⚠️ Restricted breathing if worn too tightly
  • ⚠️ Digestive discomfort
  • ⚠️ Skin irritation
  • ⚠️ Overheating
  • ⚠️ Discomfort during exercise

If you experience dizziness, pain, shortness of breath or discomfort, it is important to remove the waist trainer immediately.

7 Days Of Cayenne Pepper, Lemon & Olive Oil — My Honest Wellness Diary 🌢️πŸ‹✨

For the past 7 days I decided to try the cayenne pepper, lemon juice, olive oil and black pepper wellness drink that so many people online claim can help with:

  • Digestion
  • Bloating
  • Gut health
  • Appetite control
  • “Detoxing” the body

This blog is not medical advice. This is simply my REAL personal diary-style experience documenting how my body responded day by day.

DAY 1 — “Why Does This Feel Like Drinking Salad Dressing?” πŸ˜‚

The very first thing I noticed…

Taking olive oil like a shot felt VERY strange.

It didn’t taste horrible, but because I’ve never drunk olive oil before it honestly felt like I was drinking salad dressing or seasoning.

The cayenne pepper had a strong warming paprika-style heat to it too.

However, within the first morning I noticed:

  • 🚽 Easier bowel movements
  • ✨ Less bloating
  • 🌿 More active digestion

I also felt warmth in my stomach almost immediately.

At this point I was curious but cautious.

DAY 2 — Digestion Definitely Increased πŸ‘€

By day two my digestive system definitely felt more active.

I wasn’t experiencing heavy bloating after meals and I felt “lighter” overall.

One thing I realised though is that cayenne pepper is STRONG.

You can physically feel the heat in your stomach.

I began wondering how this would affect people with IBS or stomach sensitivities.

DAY 3 — The Most Intense Day 🌢️πŸ”₯

This was definitely the most intense day for me.

My digestive system was WORKING.

I was going toilet a lot throughout the day and that’s when I realised:

⚠️ If you have IBS, acid reflux, ulcers, gastritis, or stomach sensitivity — this honestly may not be for you.

Cayenne pepper significantly stimulates the digestive system and can increase stomach irritation in some people.

At this point my body felt almost fully “flushed out.”

However, I still noticed:

  • ✨ No bloating
  • 🚽 Very regular digestion
  • 🌿 Less heaviness after eating

DAY 4 — Everything Calmed Down πŸ’š

After the intensity of day three, my body actually started feeling much more balanced.

I woke up lighter and calmer digestion-wise.

One thing that shocked me:

I ate quite a bit of bread that day but still didn’t experience the bloating I would normally feel.

At this point I also started enjoying the flavour more.

The warmth from the cayenne and black pepper actually became comforting.

DAY 5 — Finding A Balance 🌿

By day five things slowed down and my digestion started feeling much more “normal.”

I personally noticed:

  • ✨ Reduced cramping
  • 🌿 Less bloating
  • 🚽 Improved digestion
  • πŸ’§ Feeling lighter overall

I actually started looking forward to taking it in the mornings.

But again… I still strongly believe this challenge would NOT suit everyone.

DAY 6 — Appetite Changes πŸ‘€

This was one of the biggest things I noticed.

My appetite definitely felt more controlled.

I wasn’t constantly thinking about snacks or feeling hungry all day long.

I felt fuller for longer and my cravings seemed calmer overall.

I’m wondering if the healthy fats from olive oil combined with the stimulation from cayenne helped contribute to this feeling.

DAY 7 — Final Thoughts ✨

After completing the 7 days, would I recommend this challenge?

Honestly… Yes — but with caution.

I personally experienced:

  • ✨ Less bloating
  • 🚽 More regular digestion
  • 🌿 Reduced cramping
  • πŸ’§ Feeling lighter
  • 🍽️ Better appetite control

HOWEVER:

⚠️ I would NOT recommend this challenge for people with:

  • IBS
  • Acid reflux
  • Ulcers
  • Gastritis
  • Digestive sensitivity
  • Pepper/spice intolerance

If you have a sensitive stomach, a gentler option may simply be:

  • πŸ‹ Lemon water
  • 🌿 Olive oil
  • πŸ’§ Increased hydration

The Risks Of Excessive Cayenne Pepper Use ⚠️

One important thing I learned during this challenge is that MORE is not always better.

Excessive cayenne pepper consumption may potentially contribute to:

  • Stomach irritation
  • Acid reflux flare-ups
  • Digestive discomfort
  • Diarrhoea
  • Burning sensations
  • Worsening IBS symptoms

This is why I personally would NOT do this challenge every single day long-term.

For me, this feels more realistic as:

  • ✨ A short wellness reset
  • ✨ Once every month
  • ✨ Or every couple of months

  • ✨ Sustainable habits matter most

Why Intentional Training Matters More Than Exhaustion πŸ’ͺ🏽✨

One thing I’m learning during my new fitness and wellness journey is that smarter training matters just as much as harder training.

For a long time, I thought every workout needed to completely exhaust me for it to “count.”

But recently I’m starting to understand something important:

Recovery, intentional movement, consistency, nutrition, and understanding your body are all part of transformation too.

My Recent Workout Split 🌿

Yesterday I completed a longer kettlebell and Pilates session focused on:

  • Core activation
  • Upper body strength
  • Conditioning
  • Pilates sculpting
  • Mobility & endurance

So instead of overtraining the next day, I intentionally changed my focus.

Today’s workout became more of an active strength conditioning day rather than another intense overload session.

What I Focused On Today πŸ’š

  • πŸ‘ Lower body activation
  • πŸ’ͺ🏽 Light tricep work
  • 🌿 Resistance band training
  • ✨ Glute-focused movements
  • ⚡ Mobility & controlled conditioning

I used:

  • Lighter dumbbells for the back of my arms
  • Resistance bands for glute activation
  • Overhead squats
  • Angled kickbacks at approximately 45°
  • Controlled lower body movements

One thing I learned is that the angled kickbacks target more than just the glute maximus.

This movement can help activate:

  • Upper glutes
  • Side glutes (glute medius)
  • Hip stabilisers

This is often why these exercises are used in programmes focused on creating more glute shape and stability.

Why Resistance Bands Are So Effective πŸ”₯

Resistance bands may look simple, but they’re incredibly effective for:

  • Muscle activation
  • Improving stability
  • Supporting glute engagement
  • Increasing muscular endurance
  • Lower-impact strength training

Research suggests resistance band training can improve strength and muscular endurance similarly to traditional resistance training when performed consistently.

Research: Resistance Bands & Strength Training

Why Pilates Has Changed My Training 🧘🏽‍♀️

Pilates has honestly become one of the most important parts of my fitness journey.

I can physically see changes in:

  • My posture
  • Upper back definition
  • Core strength
  • Waist sculpting
  • Movement control

Research suggests Pilates may improve flexibility, posture, muscular endurance, and core stability.

Research: Pilates & Physical Conditioning

Pilates also helps me feel more connected to my body rather than simply “working out.”

Not Every Workout Needs To Be Extreme ⚡

I think social media sometimes makes us feel like every workout needs to:

  • Leave us exhausted
  • Make us sweat excessively
  • Be high intensity constantly
  • Completely destroy our muscles

But sustainable wellness doesn’t always work like that.

Some days your body may benefit more from:

  • Mobility work
  • Controlled resistance training
  • Active recovery
  • Pilates
  • Stretching
  • Walking

Especially when combining:

  • Kettlebells
  • HIIT
  • Progressive overload
  • Strength training

Recovery becomes essential for muscle repair and growth.

My Current Goals ✨

Right now my goals are:

  • Improve body composition
  • Increase muscle definition
  • Reduce body fat percentage
  • Improve posture
  • Increase strength
  • Create sustainable habits
  • Support my energy naturally

This journey is becoming less about “quick weight loss” and more about long-term health and intentional movement.

Final Thoughts πŸ’š

I’m learning that intentional movement is powerful.

Not every day has to be extreme. Not every workout has to leave you exhausted.

Consistency, recovery, strength, mobility, nutrition, and patience all work together over time.

And honestly? That mindset shift alone has completely changed my fitness journey ✨

Why I’m Combining Kettlebells, HIIT, Pilates & Progressive Overload for My New 30-Day Challenge πŸ”₯✨

Claudia brown woman with curly hair standing showing shape currently from Pilates challenge

After completing my last Pilates arms and body sculpt challenge, I learned something important:

Consistency changes everything.

Not perfection. Not starvation. Not extreme dieting. Not random workouts here and there.

Real transformation comes from showing up repeatedly, understanding your body, and building sustainable habits over time.

That’s exactly why I’m starting a brand-new 30-day challenge combining:

  • πŸ”₯ Kettlebell training
  • ⚡ High-intensity workouts (HIIT)
  • 🧘🏽‍♀️ Pilates
  • πŸ‹πŸ½‍♀️ Progressive overload with weights

This challenge will focus mainly on:

  • Arm definition
  • Upper back sculpting
  • Core strength
  • Waist definition
  • Muscle growth
  • Fat reduction
  • Overall body composition

What My Last Challenge Taught Me πŸ’š

One thing I realised during my previous challenge is that if I truly want arm definition and muscle growth, I need to consistently challenge those muscles over time.

That means:

  • Resistance training
  • Push-ups
  • Strength work
  • Increasing weight load gradually
  • Consistency

Pilates helped me build a strong foundation.

I noticed huge improvements in:

  • My upper back definition
  • My posture
  • Core engagement
  • Waist sculpting
  • Body awareness

I could physically see changes in my body when wearing halter tops and fitted gym wear — especially around my back and waist area.

Now I’m excited to take things further by introducing heavier weights and increasing my load gradually over time.

This process is called progressive overload, which is one of the key principles for muscle growth and strength development.

Why Progressive Overload Matters πŸ‹πŸ½‍♀️

Progressive overload simply means gradually increasing the challenge placed on your muscles over time.

This can include:

  • Increasing weights
  • Increasing repetitions
  • Increasing resistance
  • Improving intensity

Research shows that progressive overload helps stimulate muscle adaptation and growth.

Without increasing resistance over time, muscles eventually stop adapting.

This is one reason I’m now investing in additional weights and kettlebells for my next phase of training.

Research: Progressive Overload & Strength Training

Why Kettlebells Are So Effective πŸ”₯

Kettlebell workouts combine strength training and cardio conditioning simultaneously.

Unlike isolated gym machines, kettlebells activate multiple muscle groups together, helping improve:

  • Functional strength
  • Core stability
  • Muscular endurance
  • Coordination
  • Calorie expenditure

Research suggests kettlebell training may help:

  • Increase lean muscle
  • Improve cardiovascular fitness
  • Support fat reduction
  • Improve posture & movement patterns

Research: ACE Kettlebell Study

How HIIT Supports Fat Burning ⚡

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) will help support my conditioning and calorie burn during this challenge.

HIIT workouts are associated with:

  • Higher calorie expenditure
  • Improved endurance
  • Enhanced cardiovascular fitness
  • The afterburn effect (EPOC)

The afterburn effect means your body continues using energy after your workout has ended.

This is one reason HIIT is often used alongside strength training for body recomposition goals.

Research: HIIT & Fat Loss

Why Pilates Will Always Stay In My Routine 🧘🏽‍♀️

Pilates genuinely transformed how I move, train, and feel in my body.

It helped me:

  • Strengthen my deep core muscles
  • Improve posture
  • Increase flexibility
  • Improve mobility
  • Create more waist definition
  • Strengthen my back
  • Improve stability and control

Pilates also helped create that sculpted feminine strength look I personally love.

It’s no longer just “light movement” to me — it’s now an essential part of my training foundation.

Research: Pilates & Physical Conditioning

My Goal Is Body Composition — Not Just Weight Loss ✨

My focus now is improving body composition rather than obsessing over the scale.

That means:

  • Increasing muscle mass
  • Reducing body fat percentage
  • Improving strength
  • Increasing endurance
  • Building sustainable habits

Muscle is metabolically active, meaning increasing lean muscle may help support long-term metabolism and overall strength.

This is why this combination works so well together:

  • πŸ‹πŸ½‍♀️ Weights & kettlebells help build muscle
  • ⚡ HIIT helps increase calorie burn
  • 🧘🏽‍♀️ Pilates helps sculpt, stabilise & strengthen

Nutrition Still Matters πŸ“πŸ₯—

Training is important, but nutrition remains a huge part of my journey too.

I’m continuing to focus on:

  • Fruit-filled mornings
  • Hydration
  • Protein-focused meals
  • Whole foods
  • Gut health
  • Supporting recovery naturally

I want to fuel my body properly so I can continue building muscle, supporting recovery, and feeling healthier physically and mentally.

It’s about:

  • Creating sustainable habits

  • Improving my mindset
  • Healing naturally
  • Building confidence long-term

I’m excited to continue this next phase of my journey — stronger, wiser, and far more intentional than before ✨

More Than Aesthetics: Creating a Lifestyle I Can Maintain 🌿✨

Recently I went swimming with my daughter, picked up a new swimming costume, a few hair essentials, and spent the day simply enjoying life.

When I put the swimming costume on, I actually felt good.

Not because I’ve “reached my goal” yet. Not because my body is “perfect.” But because for the first time in a long time, my wellness journey feels realistic, sustainable, and healthy.

My weight loss journey has never been linear. I’ve lost weight. Gained weight. Started over. Felt motivated. Felt exhausted. Felt insecure. Felt confident.

And honestly? I know so many women can relate to that.

This Time Feels Different πŸ’š

This time I’m not trying to punish my body.

I’m not doing extreme diets I e never agree with these.  I’m not trying to lose weight as fast as possible anymore.

Instead, I’m learning how to:

  • Nourish my body properly
  • Understand my digestion
  • Reduce inflammation naturally
  • Move consistently
  • Prioritise hydration
  • Increase my protein intake
  • Create routines I can actually maintain long-term

Because I’ve realised something important:

This cannot just be a “30-day challenge.” It has to become a lifestyle.

Stepping Beyond Aesthetics ✨

Of course aesthetics can be motivating. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to feel confident in your clothes or happy in your body.

But lately my focus has shifted beyond appearance.

I want:

  • More energy
  • Better digestion
  • Less inflammation
  • Stronger workouts
  • Better mental clarity
  • Long-term health
  • Consistency

I want to feel good from the inside out.

And strangely enough, once I stopped obsessing over perfection, I actually started enjoying the process more.

Motherhood Changed My Perspective πŸ‘©πŸ½‍🍼

Being a mum changes the way you think about health.

I want to be healthy not just for now — but for years to come.

I want energy to run around with my daughter. I want to feel strong. I want to feel mentally clear. I want to create healthy habits she grows up seeing.

That’s why I’ve been focusing more on:

  • Fruit-filled mornings πŸ“
  • Hydration πŸ’§
  • Protein-focused meals πŸ—
  • Pilates & movement 🧘🏽‍♀️
  • Natural healing 🌿
  • Reducing stress
  • Consistency over perfection

What I’m Loving Right Now πŸ›️

Some of the things helping me on my wellness journey lately:

Research Supports Sustainable Habits πŸ“š

Research consistently shows that sustainable lifestyle changes are more effective long-term than extreme dieting.

According to Harvard Health, focusing on realistic nutrition habits, movement, sleep, and stress management creates more sustainable long-term health outcomes compared to restrictive dieting approaches.

Healthy fats are also important because they help the body absorb essential fat-soluble vitamins including vitamins A, D, E, and K.

Personally, I’ve been focusing on adding more nourishing whole foods and reducing heavily processed ingredients where possible.

Combined with hydration, fruits, movement, and protein, I’ve noticed:

  • Less bloating
  • Better digestion
  • More stable energy
  • Feeling fuller for longer
  • Better recovery after workouts

Although wellness routines are personal and everybody is different, this has become one small intentional habit that I genuinely enjoy incorporating into my mornings.

Lymphatic System Support 🌿

The lymphatic system plays an important role in helping the body move waste, support immune function, and maintain fluid balance.

While no single drink can “detox” the body completely, hydration, movement, proper nutrition, and circulation-supporting ingredients may help support healthy lymphatic flow naturally.

Ingredients like:

  • Lemon
  • Hydration
  • Cayenne pepper
  • Movement/exercise
  • Healthy fats

are often used in wellness routines focused on circulation and digestive support.

Cayenne pepper may help support circulation due to its capsaicin content, while hydration supports healthy fluid movement throughout the body.

Why I Started Making Natural Hair Butter for My Baby’s Hair 🌿🧴✨

Whisking mango butter with olive oil and other ingredients

As a mum of a child with eczema and severe nut allergies, I’ve realised how important it is to know exactly what is inside the products we use daily.

When your child carries an EpiPen, you read every ingredient differently.

Something as simple as hair oil or skin cream can become stressful because so many products contain hidden nut oils, fragrances, preservatives, or ingredients that trigger reactions.

I recently ordered what I thought would be a safe natural oil blend containing pumpkin seed oil, vitamin E oil, and black castor oil… but hidden within the ingredients was almond oil.

Unfortunately, that meant I couldn’t use it on my daughter.

That moment really pushed me to start creating our own products naturally at home so I know exactly what is going onto her hair and skin.

The Beginning of Our Natural Hair Journey 🌱

This is just the beginning for us, but I’ve already started experimenting with simple nourishing ingredients that work beautifully together.

For my first homemade hair butter, I used:

  • Mango butter as the base
  • Olive oil
  • Fenugreek-infused oil
  • Clove-infused oil

I wanted something moisturising, simple, and gentle enough for sensitive skin while still supporting healthy hair growth and scalp care.

Why I Chose Mango Butter πŸ₯

Many natural butters contain nut derivatives, but mango butter is often considered a gentler alternative for those avoiding common nut-based ingredients.

Mango butter is rich in:

  • Fatty acids
  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin E
  • Moisture-locking properties

It helps soften dry hair while supporting moisture retention for the scalp and strands.

For children with eczema-prone skin, moisture support is incredibly important because dryness can increase irritation and discomfort.

Fenugreek for Hair Growth 🌿

Fenugreek has been traditionally used in many cultures to support hair growth and scalp health naturally.

Fenugreek seeds contain:

  • Protein
  • Iron
  • Antioxidants
  • Plant compounds linked to scalp nourishment

Many people use fenugreek-infused oils to help support:

  • Hair strength
  • Reduced shedding
  • Scalp hydration
  • Healthy hair growth routines

Clove Oil Benefits ✨

Cloves contain antioxidants and warming compounds traditionally used in natural hair care.

When infused carefully into oil, cloves are often used to support:

  • Scalp circulation
  • Hair strengthening
  • Healthy scalp conditions

Because children’s skin is sensitive, I keep everything very diluted and simple.

Why Ingredient Awareness Matters So Much 🚨

If you’re a parent of a child with allergies, you understand how exhausting ingredient checking can become.

Perfumes, almond oil, peanut derivatives, and hidden stabilisers are found in so many “natural” products.

Even products marketed for children or sensitive skin can still contain allergens.

That’s why making products ourselves has become empowering for me.

I know what goes into the mixture. I control the ingredients. And I can adjust things according to my daughter’s needs.

Natural Living Has Become Healing for Me Too πŸ’š

This journey started with hair care, but honestly it’s becoming much bigger than that.

I’m learning more about:

  • Natural skincare
  • Soap making
  • Bath products
  • Gentle ingredients
  • Holistic wellness

A lovely friend from my Women Who Move empowerment group actually shared an amazing website with me where I can purchase natural bases for:

  • Soaps
  • Bath bombs
  • Shower gels
  • Body butters
  • Natural skincare products

I’m genuinely excited to learn more about the process and eventually create products that nourish both hair and skin naturally.

The Connection Between Stress, Skin & Wellness 🌿

Research shows that stress and skin health are often deeply connected.

Conditions like eczema can sometimes worsen during periods of stress, irritation, environmental triggers, or inflammation.

Creating calmer routines, using gentler ingredients, and reducing unnecessary chemicals may help support healthier skin environments.

Sometimes healing starts with small intentional choices.

Choosing simpler ingredients. Choosing awareness. Choosing nourishment. Choosing to learn.

This natural hair journey is about more than growth — it’s about safety, care, healing, and reconnecting with what we place on our bodies daily.

And honestly… I’m excited to see where this journey takes us πŸŒΏπŸ’š
