As a mum to a little one with multiple allergies, food shopping has become a completely different experience. My daughter has confirmed allergies to egg and dairy, with possible peanut and other allergies still being tested. That means every trip to the supermarket feels like a mini investigation — and honestly, sometimes a battle.
Snacks and simple meals can be the hardest. As parents, we’re always worrying: “Are they eating enough? Am I giving them the right foods? Could this be the meal that triggers a reaction?” Add teething into the mix and suddenly every day feels like a cycle of worry about what they can safely eat.
The Fish Finger Discovery π
Recently, during a shopping trip to Aldi (which I filmed for you — see below π), I decided to compare their premium fish fingers with the cheaper option. What I found surprised me:
- The cheaper brand had more actual fish content than the premium ones.
- The premium version contained more allergens and additives.
- The cheaper box was only around £1.39, while the premium version cost £3.25.
π It was such a good reminder that price doesn’t always equal quality or safety, especially for families managing allergies.
Why Reading Labels Matters
There have been times when I assumed a food would contain egg or dairy, only to flip it over and find it hidden in the smallest print. I always wish allergens were written clearly in big bold letters on the front of every pack.
But since that’s not the reality, we as parents need to be label detectives. That day in Aldi, checking the fish fingers was just another step in this journey of protecting my daughter and keeping her safe.
Practical Tips for Parents
Here are a few things that help me (and might help you too):
- Always read the back of the pack — even if it’s something you’ve bought before, recipes change.
- Keep a food and symptom diary — for example, if your child develops a rash or upset tummy after a meal, note it down along with the food brand and ingredients.
- Don’t be afraid to choose the “basic” brand — sometimes it’s safer, simpler, and even healthier.

My Ongoing Journey πΏ
Alongside managing my daughter’s allergies, I’m also exploring whether there are foods or approaches that can help heal her eczema naturally. It’s not the main focus of today’s blog, but it’s something I’ll share as I learn more.
I know many of you are also looking for holistic approaches, so let’s keep this conversation open.
Final Thoughts
This is the very first blog post I’m linking from my Facebook page — and it feels fitting because it captures exactly what I want this space to be: a place where we share honest discoveries, helpful tips, and real-life experiences about living with allergies.
If you’re a parent navigating the same journey, I’d love to hear from you. Do you also find the “cheaper” options sometimes turn out to be the best ones? Drop me a comment or share your experience below π.
