💰 Smart Money Tips for Mums on a Single Income

💰 Smart Money Tips for Mums on a Single Income

Being a mum on a single income — whether you’re on Universal Credit or another type of government support — can feel overwhelming. The bills don’t stop, and kids always need something. It’s easy to feel like there’s never enough to go around.

I’ve been there, and I know how it feels. That’s why I want to share a principle I’ve learned from Rich Dad Poor Dad: always pay yourself first.

Even if it’s just £5 or £10 a month, set it aside for you. That money is your safety net, your future fund, and proof to yourself that you’re in control.

But here’s the question: how do you pay yourself first when money already feels so tight? The answer is: shop smarter.

🛒 Shop Smarter, Save More

The small daily trips to the corner shop add up quickly. You think you’re just popping in for one thing, but before you know it, you’ve spent double what you planned. That’s why bulk buying and smart shopping habits make such a difference.

Here are some practical ways to save money:

1. Buy Food in Bulk

Staples like rice, pasta, and cooking oil are much cheaper when you buy them in larger packs. A 10kg bag of rice or a big bottle of oil will last weeks and save you money compared to buying smaller amounts.

2. Stock Up on Nappies When They’re on Sale

Babies go through nappies fast! Instead of paying full price each time, look out for sales and promotions. Buy in bulk when prices drop — you’ll save money in the long run and reduce the stress of running out.

3. Essentials from Wholesalers

Items we use every day — washing-up liquid, washing powder, fabric softener, deodorant, lotion — all cost less when bought in bigger boxes or multipacks from wholesalers. The upfront cost might feel higher, but you’ll spend less over time.

4. Create a “Pay Myself” Jar

Even if it’s just a fiver, put something aside for yourself each month before you spend on anything else. Over time, those little amounts add up, and you’ll feel more secure knowing you have something set aside.

🌟 Small Changes, Big Results

These tips may seem simple, but together they can save you hundreds over the year. More importantly, they give you breathing room to put something aside for yourself and your future.

Remember: it’s not about doing everything at once, but about building habits that save money over time. Being a mum on a single income is tough, but with smart planning, you can stretch your money further, stress less, and feel more in control.
