✅Showing Up Anyway: How I Stay Consistent as a Mum — Even on the Hard Days

Today was one of those days.

My daughter needed more attention than usual — she’s teething, exploring, and demanding every ounce of energy I have. I didn’t make it to the gym, and even the thought of setting up a workout felt exhausting.

But I still showed up.

Instead of giving up, I found a way to move in the middle of motherhood chaos — between tidying toys, calming tears, and keeping her entertained. I did simple arm raises, leg lifts, and chair push-downs right there in the living room, surrounded by her laughter and a bit of mess.

Because showing up doesn’t always look perfect.

Sometimes, it’s just about doing what you can, where you are, with what you have.

🧠 Why Consistency Matters More Than Perfection

Research continues to prove that small, consistent movement has long-term physical and mental health benefits — especially for parents.

  • A 2023 study published in the Journal of Behavioral Medicine found that people who exercised regularly, even for short bursts, reported higher self-efficacy, better mood, and improved sleep quality.
  • The NHS recommends that adults engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week, but notes that “every minute counts.” Even 5–10 minute intervals can improve cardiovascular health and regulate stress hormones like cortisol.

Consistency creates discipline, and discipline fuels progress — whether that’s fitness, parenting, or career growth.

πŸ‹️‍♀️ Why Little Movements Matter for Mums

For mums, movement isn’t just about losing weight or looking fit — it’s about reclaiming energy, confidence, and emotional balance.

Physical activity releases endorphins — the “feel good” hormones — which are particularly powerful in combating parental burnout and postnatal fatigue.

According to the Harvard Health Blog, even light resistance training improves blood circulation and oxygen delivery to the brain, helping with focus and reducing stress levels.

So even when you’re doing simple stretches or squats next to your child — you’re investing in your long-term health.

πŸ’ͺ My Mum-Friendly Movement Tips

  1. Set a 10-minute timer. Move for as long as it feels good — even if it’s just a short session.
  2. Use your environment. A chair, sofa, or even your child’s play mat can become part of your workout.
  3. Involve your child. Dance, stretch, or go for walks together — it builds healthy habits early.
  4. Track your steps. Use a smartwatch or phone to remind you that progress is still happening, even on slower days.
  5. Celebrate effort, not outcome. Every move counts.

πŸ’‘ Why I’m Glad I Showed Up Today

After that short session, I felt calmer, lighter, and more focused.

Movement changed my mindset — instead of feeling behind, I felt productive.

That’s the hidden power of consistency:

It builds momentum.

It reminds you that you’re capable — even when life gets chaotic.

And after I finished my quick workout, I tidied up, put on some music, and realized — I’d just burned calories while getting my house back in order.

That’s a win in my book.

🧩 The Science Behind “Showing Up”

  • A Stanford University study on habit formation found that repetition, not motivation, is what builds long-term change. The brain creates neural shortcuts when we repeat behaviors, making it easier to “just do it” even when tired.

  • Regular physical activity improves executive function — the brain processes that control focus, planning, and time management (Frontiers in Psychology, 2022).

That’s why “showing up anyway” matters. You’re not just maintaining fitness — you’re training your brain to stay disciplined, resilient, and flexible under pressure.

🌸 Final Thoughts

Being a mum means adapting. Some days you’ll have perfect routines, others will be messy and unpredictable. But if you keep showing up, your body — and mind — will thank you.

Every rep, every stretch, every walk counts.

Progress isn’t about perfection. It’s about persistence.
